Everything you own is written down somewhere. Usually in one person's head.
A digital legacy is the whole picture of what you have and where it is kept — the accounts, the policies, the deed, the locker, the gold. Apps have started to appear for it. They do not all do the same thing, and the difference matters more than the feature lists suggest.
KinNest helps you manage your digital legacy. Organise records, documents and personal wishes, and manage how they are shared with the people you trust.
Make important information easier to find.
A digital legacy can include financial records, property documents, personal wishes and information about online accounts. Keeping it organised helps the people you trust understand what exists and where to find it.
KinNest does not ask for access to your financial accounts or login credentials. We recommend keeping passwords, PINs and other access credentials separately, and recording where to find them in KinNest.
Your records can still contain sensitive information. Consider what you include and who should receive it.
Three questions, in this order
- What does it hold? If the answer includes passwords or keys, a breach does not expose a list — it exposes your accounts. Ask what is actually stored, not what is encrypted.
- What makes it open? Some send everything when you stop answering a reminder. A long trip, a hospital stay, a changed number, and it fires. Ask whether a person confirms anything, and whether you get a window to say you are fine.
- What if you are locked out? You should be able to get back in without the record opening to anyone. If the only way back is the handover itself, forgetting a password has the same result as dying.
Plainly answered
What is a digital legacy?
Everything you own or hold that your family would need to find: bank accounts, insurance policies, property papers, gold, a locker, a pension, anything held online. It is not only the digital things. The word covers the whole picture of what exists and where it is kept, which is exactly the picture that disappears when the one person who held it is gone.
What does a digital legacy app do?
It helps you organise important records, documents and wishes, and plan how trusted people can receive that information. Features and access arrangements vary between products.
Is a digital legacy app the same as a will?
No, and one cannot replace the other. A will is a legal document that decides who owns what after you are gone. A digital legacy app records what exists and where it is. Without a will your family may know exactly what you had and still face a long legal process to receive it; without a record they may never learn it existed at all.
What should I look for before trusting one?
Check what information it stores, how access is protected, how sharing and handover work, and what happens if you lose access to your account. Records and documents deserve protection even when credentials are stored separately.
What happens to my bank account when I die?
Nothing automatic. It sits, and after a set number of years it is transferred to a government or regulator fund, where it waits to be claimed. The money is never forfeited, but the family has to know the account existed and which institution held it before they can ask. That is why so much sits unclaimed: not lost, just unknown.
Does KinNest store my passwords or documents?
KinNest stores the records, documents and photos you choose to add. KinNest does not ask for access to your financial accounts or login credentials. We recommend keeping passwords, PINs and other access credentials separately, and recording where to find them in KinNest.
